(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission has addressed several bridge related projects in the past few months, and during their meeting Tuesday afternoon, they took another step towards relocating the Dalby Bottom Bridge, located in the south east corner of the county on the intersection of River Rd. and South 144th.
Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says the bridge has to be moved a few feet due to engineering specs and its proximity to the Union Pacific main line railway.
The value of the bridge, as well as the county's financial responsibility to it, also has a lot to do with the commission's decision to have it moved. The total cost of the bridge exceeds $500,000. The county will be paying 80 percent of the total cost of the bridge including any engineering costs. Right now, the county has about $39,000 invested in the bridge, and Schuele says that if they did not proceed now with imminent domain, then there would be a significant cost with Union Pacific Railway.
Schuele says the commission agreed to proceed with emminent domain with one land owner regarding the bridge, having already reached an agreement to purchase rights from another land owner. Schuele adds that it would be a significant cost to Atchison County taxpayers if the commission did not proceed with this.
