(KTNC) -- One of the six Republicans hoping to be the next Governor of Nebraska visited Falls City last week.
Mike Foley is currently the Nebraska State Auditor and previously was a State Senator from Lincoln. Foley says his experience in state government sets him apart in a crowded Republican Primary field.
As Auditor, Foley says he’s uncovered several instances where state money is being misspent – instances that had previously been swept under the rug – particularly he says in the Department of Health and Human Services. He says his first priority, as Governor, would be to rebuild the Department of Health and Human Services, which he describes as “decrepit” and “deficient.”
Foley says he’d sit down with the next State Auditor and go through various state agency budgets to find places where they could cut spending, which he says would lead to lower tax rates.
While he’d start with the DHHS, Foley says he'd also look at cutting the budgets of other state agencies as well.
Foley says his priority during the current legislative session is to reverse cuts made to the State Auditor’s budget last year.
Five other Republicans are running for Governor: Pete Ricketts, Bryan Slone, and current State Senators Charlie Janssen, Tom Carlson, and Beau McCoy.
