( KNZA)--A former Jackson County employee convicted of stealing $16,000 in county funds has been placed on probation.
Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller says 40-year-old Janette Fund, of Delia, was sentenced Friday in Jackson County District Court on 20 felony counts of making false information and 20 counts of misdemeanor theft.
Miller says Fund was given a suspended sentence on the charges and placed on 48 months supervised probation.
Miller had asked the judge to order Fund to serve no less than 12 months in the county jail, followed by a term of probation. However, the judge ordered no jail time.
With Fund's lack of a criminal history, Kansas sentencing guidelines called for presumptive probation for the felony charges. However, Miller said the judge could have used his discretion to sentence Fund to jail time for the misdemeanor thefts.
Fund has agreed to pay full restitution.
She pleaded no contest in November to the charges. As part of a plea agreement, 140 additional counts were dismissed.
Fund served as administrative assistant in the county’s Noxious Weed, Landfill and Recycling Departments from April 2011 until July of last year, when authorities say she was caught with missing cash that should have been deposited.
Fund was arrested in September following an investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
