(KNZA)--Fire damaged two apartments at a Sabetha apartment complex Friday.
Sabetha Fire Chief Jim Johnson says firefighters were called to the Hillcrest Apartments at 515 Roosevelt Street around 3:15 in the afternoon to a report of an fire in apartment 4 in the F building.
He says when firefighters arrived they found flames in the upstairs apartment, which received extensive fire, smoke and water damage. He says the fire extended to the ceiling area in the apartment below, which received minimal water damage.
Johnson says the upstairs apartment was occupied by Robyn Koehler and her two daughters, ages 12 and 9. The downstairs apartment was occupied by Carol Niehues and her 14-year-old grandson.
No injuries were reported. Johnson says none of the tenants in the two apartments were home at the time of the fire. He says the tenants in another apartment in the building were evacuated as a precaution
He says the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but investigators have ruled out electrical. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation.
Johnson says the American Red Cross was notified and the tenants in the two apartments damaged in the fire are currently staying with relatives.
Firefighters were on the scene about 1 ½ hours.
