(MSC News)--It's good news for the state of Kansas, following the release of 2013 statistics from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
In the past year, there were fewer deaths on Kansas roads than in any one year since the agency began keeping records in 1947.
The preliminary, unofficial reports show there were 344 fatalities on Kansas roads this past year, compared to 405 in 2012.
The previous low was recorded in 2008, which saw 385 fatalities.
The high came in 1969 when 780 people were killed in roadway collissions.
KDOT Safety Engineer Steven Buckley attributes the low number to an improved seatbelt rate, strategic infrastructure investment, safer vehicles and committed law enforcement and first responders.
