Atchison County Reviews Flood Plains
01/06/2014

(KAIR)--Maintaining flood plains to ensure the safety of county residents is an important issue, and members of the Atchison County Commission addressed that concern during their meeting Tuesday afternoon. Commission Chair Jeff Schuele explains that  plans regarding flood plains from nearly eight years ago were presented, to show the importance of ensuring they adhere to state guidelines.

It was found that Atchison County is in rare company regarding flood plain management. They are not a zoned or permit requiring county, and they are one of the last remaining counties that are like that. The county is out of compliance with the state, and required flood zone mapping.

It was proposed that the county go to a simple permit when a person or business wishes to build a structure. Schuele says this will prevent structures being built in a flood plain, 911 mapping, flood plain elevations, and will help residents in the Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

Schuele says that prior County Commissions agreed to this in order to be eligible for state and FEMA funds, so by moving forward with this permit process, the county is fulfilling those fund requirements.
