Brown Co Sheriff Warns of Computer Scam
12/06/2013

(KNZA)--Brown County Sheriff John Merchant is warning residents of a computer scam circulating the area.

Merchant says he has received several complaints from county residents who have received calls from individuals working for  "HEALTHTECH 24/7".  He says residents are being told their computer has a virus and needs immediate attention. The caller wants access to the computer so the problem can be fixed. He said there are other variations on the calls. At times, the caller tells the resident there are critical errors on the computer. The caller ask the resident to enter specific keys on the keyboard to fix the problem.  Merchant says when the caller is questioned about the situation, they become upset and angry.

Merchant says the caller is trying to obtain personal information that is entered on your computer. He says all callers were reported to have had a very thick accent.

Merchant reminds residents to never give out personal information over the phone or computer.  He is also urging residents not to take out money orders to assist family members in financial need without making positive contact with that family member.  Merchant says this scam has re-circulated and there have been instances where well-meaning people thought they were helping family and it was a scam.
