(KAIR)--Every day during the school year, children go to school to learn what they need to succeed in today's world. What many people may not know is that there is a lot more to that learning that just opening a book. Director of Curriculum for USD 409 Robert Mueller says there are set standards in place to guide that learning. They are a set of grade by grade learning expectations for students all the way from kindergarten to 12th grade in math and language arts.
The way our society is constantly changing has made it necessary for these standards to be put in place, but Mueller says the children are benefiting from them. With the transient society that we live in, having a set, never changing set of standards makes it a lot easier for children to be better prepared for either college or the workforce.
There was some reluctance to accept these standards at first elsewhere in the country, but Mueller states that locally, there has been generally a positive response.
Mueller further states that there are no major changes to the standards planned for the immediate future since any changes now would just confuse students and teachers who have just gotten used to these new standards. He does add that science and social studies are currently developing their own set of standards.
