Keeping Kids Safe During Holidays Is Easier Than You Think

(KAIR)--There is now doubt that the holiday shopping season has started, and many of us are already out there buying toys and gifts for the special children in our lives. However, it's important to keep safety in mind not only when you are shopping, but when you purchase those toys as well. Cheri Sage is the State Director for Safe Kids Kansas, and she advises adults to look at the package of the toy, and consider the child's age before you buy it. Just because your child has not put anything in their mouth before, does not mean that they will not do it, so it is best to be safe just in case.

There is a little know trick you can use to decide if a toy is appropriate for your child's age. Sage recommends putting toys or toy parts into a toilet paper tube. If it fits inside the tube, there is a good chance that it will also fit down your child's throat. This is a good way to also test the toys you already have in y our home as well.

Finally, she advises parents to keep the small, button type batteries away from children, as they can cause a great deal of harm if they are swallowed.

Some other tips to keep in mind while shopping include making sure that your child is properly buckled in and restrained in a shopping cart, never leave your child unattended in the cart, and never place an infant carrier on the top of a shopping cart.
