(KAIR)--Stores all across the nation are already seeing the rush of holiday shoppers going from store to store in search of that perfect gift for that special someone. However, it is important to remember that not everyone is in the Christmas spirit, and are out to take advantage of those shoppers. Atchison police chief Mike Wilson says the best thing you can do while you are out shopping is to either take your purchases home right away, or lock them in your truck so they are not visible.
Wilson further says that thefts are not exclusive to the holiday season, and it is important for people to keep their doors locked at all times. While there is the occasional broken window in a car, most thefts occur when the doors are left unlocked.
It is also important to remember that if you are purchasing larger gifts and using a pickup truck to transport them, you should not leave them out there in the open for potential thieves.
Also, you can deter theft at your home by keeping your gifts out of open view while opening your window to display your tree.
