(KAIR)--A stretch of Highway 74 will soon be officially transferred from the state of Kansas to Atchison county, and the logistics that goes into making that transfer was one of the focuses of the Atchison county commission when they met Tuesday afternoon. Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that County Counselor Patrick Henderson and Emergency Management Director Wes Lander will be notifying the post office of potential address changes that could happen as a result of the transfer. There is no firm date in place yet as to when the highway, which sits in the southern part of the county will be officially transfer, but the commission is in contact with KDOT regarding possible dates, and Schuele says there should be more information as far as that goes by the time the commission meets next week.
In other business, the commission voted 3-0 to change employee benefit plans, moving away from the state plan to Preferred Health Systems starting next year. Schuele says there are several reasons as to why they decided to make the change. First, they do not get needed data from the state, that is generally a year outside of the county's time frame. Also, they are subject to an increase in premiums due to the state of Kansas' budget cycle year. Finally, there are constraints on premiums that the county charges their employees.
Schuele says that the commission does expect some significant savings with this new plan, but it also depends on how many employees participate in it.
