(KNZA)--The Brown County Sheriff’s Department is in the process of implementing a mounted search and rescue unit to serve Brown County and surrounding areas.
Sheriff John Merchant says the organization will consist of individuals who are willing to volunteer their time and their horse to search for lost or stranded individuals. Merchant says being on horseback will give them the ability to go into areas where motorized vehicles would not be practical. He said providing the service will better prepare the county for various emergencies, should they arise.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Brown County Mounted Search and Rescue organization is encouraged to attend the next meeting Monday, November 4th at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Brown County Sheriff’s office in Hiawatha. The guest speaker will be Captain Shane Hoobler with the Shawnee County mounted posse.
