(KAIR)--Officials in Buchanan County are moving closer to a vote on a sales tax increase that, if approved, would fund a new ambulance district in the county.
It was announced earlier this year that Heartland Hospital, who currently runs the ambulance service, will end services in July of next year. Soon after that announcement, a group called the CARE committee proposed a county run ambulance service. The proposed quarter cent sales tax has been placed on the November ballot by the Buchanan county commission.
CARE Committee co-chair Dwight Scroggins says that the message they are trying to send is that the county wants to have an ambulance service available after July of next year, as well as one that has the same level of services as the current one. Officials have said that so far, they have heard very little opposition to the proposed tax.
If the tax is approved, it would take effect on January 1, 2014
