There are about 164 million dogs and cats in american households according to the humane society of america—and the need for veterinarians is increasing. However—the unemployment rate for veterinarians is also on the rise.
A new online program is helping those recent graduates get some much-needed business knowledge. The national food animal veterinary institute along with kansas state university developed the program, which has courses on budgeting, marketing, client satisfaction and hiring new employees. Veterinarians not only take care of our little furry friends—but also large animals that we rely on for food supply. Keeping their busineeses open ensures food safety—and helps rural economies.
Veterinarians come out highly educated in the healthcare of animals, but their curriculum is so packed that they don’t have room for business courses or business topics and they’re running a small business in largely rural areas and so they need that type of education.
Kansas State University collaborated with Iowa State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Oklahoma State University and University of Missouri-Columbia.
