Pawnee City Council Votes to Keep Metal Dump Open

Pawnee City City Hall

(KTNC) -  Pawnee City will keep its metal dump open.  The City Council voted 3-1 Monday night to keep the facility open.  The council also decided what to do with a check the city received from Smith Auto for the metal that had been at the dump.
City Clerk Tammy Stephens says the council discussed possibly closing the metal dump.
People who want to discard metal items can bring them to the metal dump.  They first need to get a key from City Hall, with a fee of two dollars for Pawnee City residents and four dollars for non-residents.
Stephens says the council decided to use the $6,800 the city received for the metal removed from the dump to set up a reserve account to pay for water tower repairs.
In other business this week, the council suspended bids on two city-owned weed-eaters.  The city had taken bids for three weed-eaters, but pulled the bids when it was learned that one of the machines is newer than the other two.  The city will take bids on the two older weed-eaters at the next council meeting.
Stephens says Pawnee City is also speaking with contractors who may be able to retrieve pieces of riprap from a creek bank.  The city had allowed a contractor to place concrete from the basements of two houses that had been torn down along the bank of the creek near the sewer plant.  The city then pushed the concrete into the creek to stabilize the bank.  A rules change prohibits that practice and the city needs to remove the riprap or it could be fined.
The council also approved a request from Windstream to replace a section of buried cable on 14th Street.
