(KAIR)--Following a decision by the Atchison City Commission, the traffic signal at 4th and Main streets will be temporarily switched to a four way stop.
According to a press release issued by the city, the signal will be turned off, and stop signs with four way supplemental plaques will be installed. This arrangement will be in place for about three weeks while the city monitors the intersection and gathers feedback from the public.
The signal needs about $4,000 in repairs to return it to its normal setting. Without the repairs, the default setting on the signal blinks red for 4th street traffic and yellow for Main street traffic. This can be very confusing to motorists unfamiliar with the intersection's setting.
Before the city moves forward with a costly repair, they want to see if a four way stop is more appropriate for the current flow and traffic count.
City officials encourage residents to share their feedback.
