Trick or Treat Tradition Continues in Hiawatha

(KNZA)-Despite a push for change, the tradition of two trick or treat nights will remain in Hiawatha.

That follows a 4-1 vote Monday evening of the City Commission designating Tuesday, October 29th and Thursday, October 31st as “trick or treat” nights. The lone no vote was cast by Mayor Crosby Gernon, who says the Commission has received a petition from residents who would like to see the number of nights reduced to one.

Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce Administrator Stacy Babb presented a petition, and letters of support, from residents wanting the tradition to remain as two nights.
While the Chamber of Commerce has not taken an official stance, Babb says the board hoped to see two nights remain at least until next year's 100th Hiawatha Halloween Parade.

Gernon recommended alternating between one and two nights each year.
Commisioner Steffen Shamburg said he felt it was it's too late for a change this year, and the Commission should wait until after 2014 to consider possible changes.

Meanwhile, Hiawatha's 99th annual Halloween celebration, including the traditional parade, will be held Wednesday, October 30th.
