NRC says Cooper Nuclear Operating Safely
(KTNC) - Federal regulators say the Cooper nuclear power plant continues to operate safely and doesn't need additional oversight.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a mid-year performance update for Cooper and all the nation's nuclear power plants on Thursday.
The NRC says all the issues identified recently at the plant owned by the Nebraska Public Power District have been relatively minor.
But regulators say they still have some lingering concerns about whether NPPD has been conservative enough in its decisions about the plant.
The NRC is waiting till later this fall to inspect what NPPD has done to address those concerns.
Nebraska's other nuclear plant, Fort Calhoun, didn't receive a mid-year letter because it's under special oversight because it has been idle since 2011 and several safety violations have been found.
