(KAIR)--When Benedictine College first built St. Benedict Hall in 1910, they placed a statue of the Virgin Mary in front, The statue shot streams of water from her hands instead of light, and became a fixture at the school. However, over time, the statue started to deteriorate and collapsed for good in 1977. It has been over thirty years, but the school is now ready to reveal a new statue that will take its place. Benedictine President Steve Minnis says they worked very hard with statue and fountain makers to make sure the new statue was as close to the original as possible.
One small problem they had however was that the backdrop for the new statue would be different than it was for the old. Minnis says they performed some algebraic equations and were able to get the new statue to fit its new background just right. Missis also says that the statue going up is only part of what they have planned. The statue will be dedicated and blessed this Sunday, September 8th. The day will be started with a mass at the abbey at 10:00 followed by a procession around campus. Minnis says he suspects it will be around 11:45 when the statue is blessed.
The event is free and open to the public.
