( KNZA )--The Hiawatha Board of Education Monday evening approved a proposal to allow for a continuation of the High School wrestling program for the 2014-2015 school year, provided funds can be raised to support the program.
Nick Johansen, coach of the local Kids Wrestling Club, made the proposal to the board.
The board told Johansen he would need to raise $6,000 by February 1st of next year for the program to continue.
The High School wrestling program was cut as part of number of budget cuts approved by the board in May due to an around $100,000 increase in the cost of insurance for the district.
Johansen said he doesn’t want to see the program dropped. He says since taking over as coach of the Kids Wrestling Club two years ago, participation in the club has almost doubled, with 39 boys and 4 girls signed up last year.
He said he hopes to keep the High School program going so these young wrestlers can have the opportunity to compete at the high school level in the years to come.
