(KAIR)--All five teens, injured in a single vehicle Monday afternoon Atchison County crash, are expected to fully recover, despite initial concerns regarding the extent of injuries incurred in the wreck.
The most serious injuries were apparently suffered by 17-year-old driver Shane Carter.
He required helicopter transport from the scene and underwent treatment at Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Four teen passengers, a 15-year-old boy and three girls, one aged 17 and two 14, were all transported by ambulance for hospitalized care at local hospitals.
The injuries are not considered life threatening.
All of the vehicle’s occupants were from Atchison.
According to Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie, the wreck happened shortly after 2:00 on 314th road, with the investigation indicating that Carter was driving too fast to negotiate a curve. That caused the Chevy Blazer he was driving to enter the south ditch where it struck a concrete bridge.
It remains unclear if anyone in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
