Local Kansas communities are finalizing plans for the 4th of July, with celebrations of the nation's independence set to happen on the holiday.
In Atchison County, ceremonies will include a parade at Warnock Lake, where fireworks will be launched at dusk. In Lancaster, a tractor pull will begin at 11:00 in the morning, followed by a free will donation pulled pork dinner from 12:30 until 2:00. At 6:00, a parade will be held, followed by free ice cream and fireworks.
In Brown County that includes Horton, where a fishing derby, divided into five age categories, will be held at the Little Lake, followed by the Horton Lion's Club sponsored fireworks at Mission Lake happening at dusk.
In Robinson, the 4th of July will begin in the morning with a homemade ice cream social and pancake feed at 7:00, followed by lunch and derby races at noon.
At 4:00 the Robinson Indepdence Day Parade will be held, followed by homemade ice cream and cake at 5:00, children's games in the ballpark, and a fireworks display set to happen at 8:30 or 9:00.
The Doniphan County community of Highland will commemorate the holiday with an 11:00 4th of July parade, followed by burgers and hot dogs on Main Street.
From 11:30 until 2:00 an ice cream social will be held at the Senior Citzen's Center, followed by kids games, including frog races, in the City Ball Park.
Another ice cream social starts at 7:30, with entertainment happening at 8:00 at the Highland Community College football field. That leads up to the nighttime fireworks display scheduled for 10:00.
Troy has a fun-filled day planned, loaded with numerous activities. A 5K run/walk begins in the morning at 8:00 followed by a three-on-thr ee basketball tournament at 9:00. A fishing derby and free swim at the swimming pool both start at 10. In the afternoon, patriotic tattoos will be handed out from 3 until 3:45, followed by a parade, cookout by the fire department, tractor pull, ice cream, frog races. Those activities start around 4:00, leading up to the nightime fireworks display.
In Nemaha County, two all day events will be held,including one in Bern. That starts with races at 8:00 and an overlapping pancake feed.
Barbecue will be served in the evening from 6:30 to 8:30 while children play games and bounce on inflatables.
A Color Guard-Veteran recognition is also planned, leading up to the nighttime fireworks display.
In Centralia a 5K Run-Walk will start that morning at 8:00, benefitting the Relay For Life.
Free swimming in the municipal pool will happen from 1 to 6:30, while an ice cream social begins at 3:00 in Hidden Park. That is the same location for games to be played from 3 until 6:00, while a barbecue dinner is planned there at 4:00.
A bounce house will open at 4:45, followed by a 7:00 parade and fireworks that night.
Fort Leavenworth will again hold their annual fireworks pectacular, happening when the sun goes down. Admission is free, but visitors must be prepared for a full security check and ID is required.
