Omaha Public Power District Warns of Scams
(KLZA) The Omaha Public Power District is warning area residents not to fall for a scam being conducted via telephone.
Omaha television station KETV reports that scammers tell customers their payment is overdue or that they must pay for installation of new equipment, such as meters. OPPD says the scammers demand money, a credit card number or other financial information.
The utility says the scammers have even instructed customers to shut off security systems to "help the utility save energy" or have falsely claimed that it's a good way for the customer to reduce energy bills.
The power district says the scammers appear to be targeting customers with Latino surnames, possibly in an attempt to exploit language barriers.
