( KNZA )--Repairs are being made to a section of South 1st Street in Hiawatha after the street buckled, north of Utah Street.
Area Kansas Department of Transportation Superintendent Brian Feldkamp says they don’t know at this time what caused the problem to develop.
Feldkamp says the street started to buckle in March or April and had gotten worse over time, especially after the recent rains.
Crews Thursday dug out the section of street and filled it in with rock until it could be permanently fixed. As soon as it dries out, Feldkamp says they plan to fill it with asphalt.
KDOT recently took over maintenance of the street from the city of Hiawatha.
