( KNZA )-- The Doniphan County Commission has given their support to a proposed rails-to-trails initiative.
Ty Nagle and Gunnar Hand of the Greater St. Joseph Area Metropolitan Planning Organization met with the commission this week to give a presentation on the proposed initiative that would create a walking and biking trail from the city of St. Joseph through the cities of Elwood and Wathena utilizing the former Union Pacific railroad corridor.
Commissioner David Van Laar reminded his fellow commissioners that one of the goals when the Doniphan County Strategic Plan was developed in 2009 was to improve on and support tourism throughout the county—including the development of walking and biking trails.
The commission adopted a resolution giving their support to the proposal.
