(KTNC) - Nebraska Third District Congressman Adrian Smith says he's very disappointed the House rejected the Farm Bill. The bill went down to defeat Thursday with 195 voting in favor of it and 234 voting against the bill.
Smith says the battle over food stamps sunk the bill, with some Republicans claiming cuts to the program didn't go far enough and some Democrats saying they went too far. The bill would have cut 20-billion dollars from the food stamp program. Smith acknowledges it is a hard gap to bridge. (play audio :14 “they still remain.”)
Smith says his fellow Republicans who wanted deeper cuts missed an opportunity. (play audio :11 “by the president.”)
Smith says the House failed the nation’s farmers when it failed to pass the Farm Bill, but he sees a silver lining in the defeat. (play audio :16 “help it.”)
Smith says he wanted to see a bill pass the House so that the House could negotiate with the Senate on the legislation.
