(KNZA)--A record setting year.
That's the outcome of the annual Brown County Relay For Life, held Friday night into Saturday morning at the Hiawatha High School Track:
Event Volunteer Laura Bropst says this year's relay exceeded all previous years, generating $51,438, with donations continuing to be collected.
In 2012, the relay raised nearly $50,000.
The successful effort is the result of 29 teams who, along with sponsors, volunteers and participants, worked to raise the funds, used to finance research, education, advocacy and service programs by the American Cancer Society, which is celebrating it's 100th anniversary.
A relay wrap-up meeting will be held Monday evening, June 17th, at the Hiawatha Fisher Center. The top fundraisers will be recognized at that time, which will also include an evaluation of this year's event while looking ahead to the 2014 Brown County Relay For Life.
Top Team Fundraisers: ReJOYCE $7,745.88, Ag Partners Fighting For A Cure $6,991.18, Muscotah Cancer Support Group $3,085.10. Top Individual Fundraisers, adult category: Margo Chartier $635.91, Sharon Meyer $615.00, Nicki Lockwood $583.92. Top Individual Fundraisers, youth category: Tess Wolney $759.70, Becca Knudson $575.00, Josie Pierce $447.00. More fundraising results are posted here. This year’s top team, ReJOYCE, was comprised of family and friends in loving memory of Joyce Lockwood, a dedicated Relay Committee member that succumbed to cancer in 2012.
