(KAIR) -- The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging its citizens to take extra steps this summer to avoid burglaries.
During the summer months, the Sheriff’s Office usually sees an increase of burglaries and thefts in many area neighborhoods.
Many of the burglaries are from residences with open garage doors.
Many of the reported thefts are from unlocked vehicles.
The department suggests citizens should not leave your garage door open and unattended.
Do not leave your vehicles unlocked or store any home/ extra vehicle keys inside of your car.
They also advise citizens to not leave any valuables in plain sight within your car.
The department says thieves that have success in a neighborhood usually return to commit additional crimes in the same location(s).
They remind citizens to report any suspicious activity in your area and call the Platte County Sheriff’s Office at 816-858-3521, or dial 911 in emergency situations.
