( KNZA )--Voters in Holton will decided the fate of a half-percent sales tax increase during a special election planned for November.
That follows the decision of the Holton City Commission this week to place the issue on the ballot.
City Manager Bret Bauer says the generated funds, if approved, would bring in an estimated $396,000 annually for maintenance of the city’s infrastructure and payment of the city’s debts.
The infrastructure upkeep is the key goal of gaining the extra revenue, with Bauer saying some of the city’s sewer lines are more than 100-years-old, making them in great need of replacement.
Currently, the city of Holton has a quarter-cent sales tax in place which produces $198,000 annually, used for city street improvement projects.
