(KNZA)--The Brown County community of Everest will recognize the meaning behind Memorial Day this weekend.
It will happen Saturday, during the 4th annual Everest Honor Ceremony planned for the afternoon, and arranged, and overseen, by the Everest Park and Military Honor Guard.
The ceremony will begin at 2:00 in the Middle School Gymnasium, where a segment of the documentary, “The Greatest Generation,” featuring Tom Brokaw will be shown. That will be followed by a music-accompanied slideshow honoring the World War II Heroes of Everest.
Once that wraps up, the ceremony will move to the Everest Community Park, and the site of the future Honor Garden, at 3:30. It's there that a “Rose Ceremony” will be held, with members of Horton Boy Scout Troop #112 placing a rose upon the commemorative bricks representing the honorees who served during World War II. The Three-Volley Gun Salute will be conducted by the Hiawatha National Guard while Everest American Legion Post #288 will lower the flag during the Rose Ceremony.
The public is invited to attend.
Those coming from out of the area will see first hand the improvements being made to the Everest Community Park.
Most recently, volunteers worked to bring new vibrancy to the MoPac Caboose that stands in the park.
Gifted to the City of Everest in the late 1980's, the caboose underwent a thorough painting, and can't be missed with it's fresh coat of bright red paint.
Now, plans for the summer call for the installation of an irrigation system, and will set the stage for the ultimate goal: the beginnng of the construction of the long planned Honor Garden this fall.
