( KNZA )--The city of Hiawatha will seek bids for additional improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system

The city commission this week approved seeking bids for the replacement of sewer lines in six areas, contingent on funding.

In March, the commission accepted a bid from Utility Solutions of Bashor for the rehabilitation of nearly 12-thousand linear feet of sewer line, some manhole rehabilitation and replacement, along with six new manholes at cost of nearly $635,000.

The work is part of the 1st phase of improvements to the city’s sewer system.
Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to eliminate rain and ground water from entering the city’s sewer system.

In other business, the commission authorized spending an additional 15-hundred dollars to have BG Consultants of Lawrence complete a preliminary engineering report for improvements to Lodge Road.

The city is looking at applying  for a Community Development Block Grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce to help fund the improvements.

Also longtime Water Department Superintendent Rick Koenig was recognized for 40 years of service to the city.
