Ceremony Set for Barnes Brothers Unveiling

( KNZA )--The goal of a group of local students has been several years in the making, but now they're set to see their vision become a reality with the final step in the process happens Monday.
Monday is when the Barnes Brothers Memorial Highway designation reaches completion, with a ceremony set in Circleville to unveil the highway signage.
Royal Valley Middle School History Teacher Nathan McAlister planted the idea in the minds of a group of 7th grade students, nearly three years ago, to work towards legislation to rename three miles of Kansas Highway 79 in honor of Major League Baseball playing brothers, and Circleville natives, Virgil and Jesse Barnes.
Following City Council approval, and the introduction of the bill to see the stretch of highway renamed by former State Representative Trent LeDoux, the students continued their efforts, offering testimony before the legislature, leading to the March 2012 approval of the bill, followed by fundraising efforts to generate the nearly $3,000 dollars needed to purchase the necessary signage.
The signage will be put in place Monday afternoon, following an unveiling ceremony at the Circleville Community Center, at 1:00.
The public is invited to the unveling ceremony, which will officially proclaim the three miles of Kansas Highway 79, from Kansas Highway 16 to 254th Road, as the Barnes Brothers Memorial Highway.
Circleville natives Virgil and Jesse Barnes played in the Major Leagues through the 1920's.
