Brown County Courthouse

( KNZA )--The Brown County Commission has approved the creation of a new position within the sheriff’s office.
Following a closed door meeting Monday with Sheriff John Merchant and County Attorney Kevin Hill, the commission approved the creation of the position of jail and dispatch administrator at a starting salary of $18.50 an hour.
Merchant announced that Jennifer Lambert, who currently serves as head dispatcher, will fill the position.
Lambert has worked for the sheriff’s office since September of last year and prior to that worked about ten years for the Atchison County Sheriff’s office.
In other business, engineer Tom Bennett with BG Consultants of Manhattan discussed problems with the 19 large truss bridges in the county.
Brown County is currently responsible for a total of 208 bridges.
Bennett presented a proposal to replace four of truss bridges at a total cost of nearly $2.3 million.
Brown County’s property tax levy would have to be raised one to four mills to pay for the construction depending on the term of the bonds issued to finance the projects.
Commissioners made no decision.
