Hiawatha Sees Jobs Gain

 ( KNZA )--Many more jobs are available in Hiawatha than there was a year ago.
That’s shown through the results of an employment survey conducted by the Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development, and presented to the City Commission this week as part of HFED’s quarterly report.
Director Don Nigus said HFED contacted 20 of the 30 largest businesses in the community about their employment levels compared to a year ago...( play audio )
Nigus said the new hotel, set to open soon, had a large number of people apply for positions that will be available... ( continue audio )
Nigus said another study, recently conducted by a group of Benedictine College students on behalf of HFED, indicates a lack of  adequate housing in the community..( continue audio )
HFED’s  Housing Committee will determine the next step in addressing the issue, following numerous recommendations made.
Meanwhile, HFED could soon have a new director on aboard.  President Gene Hillyer said the part-time position has been offered to a St. Joseph woman who has verbally accepted the position. 
The position became open when Nigus resigned last month.  He remains in place currently, assisting with the transition.
