Officers to Crack Down on Teens Not Wearing Seatbelts

( KNZA )--Kansas law enforcement officers will be cracking down on young drivers not wearing seatbelts beginning Monday through March 22nd.

The Hiawatha Police Department, Horton Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol are among law enforcement agencies taking part in SAFE or the Seatbelts Are For Everyone campaign, which is funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

In 2012, forty-three teens lost their lives due to car crashes in Kansas, and seventy-four percent of those teens were not properly restrained.

Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore says even one teen death is unacceptable. In an effort to change that trend, Defore says his agency and other law enforcement across Kansas will be extra-vigilant when patrolling around schools....( play audio )

Defore says there should be no surprises when it comes to this enforcement effort. Officers will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it’s for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up.
