Horton Generates Local Power
02/23/2013

(KNZA)--The Brown County community of Horton lives up to its “Electric City” name, generating power this month, and bearing the load when Westar Energy went offline earlier this month.

City Director of Streets and Public Utilities Rex West says the changeover, from the major power source to the local one was seamless.

City Commissioner Wade Edwards calls it a testament to Horton's electricity generating abilities that the change was made, and kept in place for so long, without residents being aware that a switch had been made.

Horton earned its “Electric City” title by an act of the City Commission in 1995, paying tribute to Horton being the first city in Kansas to aquire a Rural Electric Association in 1937.
