(KNZA)--Hopes for a local winner are dashed, as an elderly Johnson county couple has come forward as the winners of this week’s 50-million-dollar Powerball Jackpot.
According to the Kansas Lottery, the couple, in their 70’s, wish to remain anonymous.
They made their purchase for the December 19th drawing at a convenience store in Shawnee.
The couple says they weren’t going to purchase a Powerball that evening, but changed their minds.
Learning that they had won, the couple placed their winning ticket in a fireproof lockbox, then informed their financial planner and attorney.
Once that happened, they made the trip to Lottery headquarters in Topeka and chose to take the cash prize.
That means, after taxes, they will receive a lump sum payment of over 22-million-dollars.
When it was first unveiled this week that the winning ticket had been purchased in northeast Kansas, hopes ran high that the new multi-millionaire would be located in the immediate local area.
