Hiawatha City Administrator Lynne Ladner said after years of conversation with KDOT and a review of the traffic count on 1st Street, the agency has agreed they need to do something with the crosswalk at Longfellow.
Ladner said they plan to install new 20 mile speed limit signs with flashing lights as well as additional school zone crossing markers on South 1st Street ..( play audio)
Ladner said the school zone area on South 1st Street will be shortened and speed limit reduced from 30 to 20 miles an hour...( continue audio )
Meanwhile, Ladner said the school zone area on North 1st Street will also be shortened and new highly reflective signage installed. The existing 20 mile per speed limit signs with flashing lights will remain in place.
Ladner said the new signs are on order and KDOT will assist the city with the installation of the signs once they come in.
