09/28/2012

( KNZA )--  Several Hiawatha businesses were honored for their contributions to the community and the state’s economy during a mixer Thursday evening.

Lyle Peterson with the Kansas Department of Commerce presented Merit Awards to the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging; Dr. Eric McPeak, optometrist; Crosswind Industries; and Hiawatha Implement.

They were among 97 Merit Award winners announced in June by the state Department of Commerce as part of Business Appreciation Month and were nominated by the Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development.

The Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, which currently has 10 employees, has been in existence for 39 years and serves 11 counties.

Sabetha based Crosswind Industries expanded to Hiawatha in 2005 and has seen growth at their Hiawatha location since that time.  The pet foods manufacturer, which started with 25 employees in Hiawatha, currently has 63 full-time employees and 60 part-time employees.

Dr. Eric McPeak has 7 employees.  Dr. McPeak purchased a historic building in downtown Hiawatha, completely renovating the building to serve as his new office. He will mark his 10th year in Hiawatha next April.

Hiawatha Implement, which has been in business 39 years, currently has 68 employees and built a new facility last year.

The mixer was sponsored by HFED and Physical and Respiratory Therapy Services LLC.
