Missy Newell Fun Run Set For October
09/24/2012

(KNZA)--A tradition of 11 years,  memorializing a local woman while benefiting scholarships and assisting those who struggle with cancer, is being planned for next month in Hiawatha.

Missy Newell, who died in October 2001, battled breast cancer for five years, but left behind a rich legacy carried on by family and friends, including the annual memorial Fun Run named in her honor.

It will again be held in conjunction with Hiawatha's Maple Leaf Festival.

Newell's longtime friend Courtney Riley says, despite so many years passing since Newell's death, her legacy remains strong to this day(Play Audio)

Riley, who remembers her cherished friend well, says the monies generated through the event are exactly how Newell wanted them used, having set up the fund and scholarship prior to her death(Play Audio)

Keeping with Newell's wishes, allocation of the funds is completed with no long application process or red tape.

Last year, the run/walk generated more than 77-hundred dollars, with an additional 83-hundred donated through memorials.

Monies, through the years, have been used to provide gas, wigs, groceries, rent, medication, and other needs, depending on the person.

The Missy Newell Memorial Fund also provides a 500-dollar scholarship for a Hiawatha High School Graduate, as well as providing funds to an additional scholarship that has been established.

The 11th annual Missy Newell Fun Run is scheduled for 8:00 on the morning of October 6th, beginning at the Hiawatha Courthouse Square.
