( KNZA )- Jackson County voters will decide during Tuesday’s primary election whether a new countywide 4-tenths of a percent retailer’s sales tax should be imposed for road and bridge improvements.
The county’s previous sales tax, which expired March 31st, was divided equally between road and bridge improvements and economic development.
The Jackson County Commission wants all the proceeds from the new sales tax proposal, about $324,000 annually, to be designated for road and bridge improvements.
Commissioners say they plan to budget annually for economic development through the county’s partnership with the Northeast Kansas Rural Development Association.
If approved by voters Tuesday, the tax would take effect on October 1st and last seven years.
Also Tuesday voters in eight Doniphan County townships will decide whether to approve mill levies for the purchase of rock.
The townships include Burr Oak, Center, Independence, Iowa, Marion, Union, Wayne and Wolf River.
The levies range from three to six mills.
If approved, all would be for four years.
The polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
