( KNZA )--A Fairview woman will stand trial for the alleged attempted murder of her 7-year-old son.
Following a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Magistrate Judge Roy Roper found there was sufficient evidence for 36-year-old Tammy Thomas to be bound over to Brown County District Court on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated endangerment of a child.
Arraignment was set for September 24th before District Judge Jim Patton.
Authorities allege Thomas poured gasoline on the bottom bunk of her son’s bed while he slept in the top bunk early April 4th at her mother's residence in the 200 block of West Maple Street in Fairview where they were living.
During the hearing, the prosecution called six witnesses while the defense called three witnesses.
Shelter insurance agent Dan Lierz of Hiawatha testified Thomas had taken out a $50,000 life insurance policy on her son February 24th, which became effective March 21st.
After initially denying responsibility, Brown County Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Linck said during a second interview Thomas admitted to pouring gasoline on the bed which she had purchased the night before. However, Linck said Thomas indicated she was attempting to scare her mother into kicking her brother out of the house for his alleged drug use.
Her brother, Bobby Glaspie, and his girlfriend, Lori Huske, said they smelled a strong order of gasoline after they had awakened that morning. The two said when they looked out a window they saw Thomas driving her vehicle and park it on a nearby street after shutting the lights off.
Huske said a short time later she saw Thomas walking toward the house, and after the two made eye contact, Thomas turned around and took off. Huske said she believes Thomas was going to set the house on fire.
The gasoline was not ignited and no one was injured.
Thomas remains in the Brown County Jail on $750,000 bond.
