( KNZA )--Hiawatha’s new chief of police is on the job.
John Defore was formally appointed to the position by the Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening and sworn into office by City Clerk Vivian Constable.
Defore was selected for the position earlier this month from among six candidates interviewed by the commission.
He comes to Hiawatha with 20 years of law enforcement experience—the last 10 years with the Wellington Police Department...( play audio )

Defore will be available to meet the public during the city’s annual Night Out crime and drug prevention event next Tuesday evening at the Fisher Community Center.
He replaces Evans Woehlecke who announced in late April that he was stepping down as chief of police after holding the position for 12 years. He plans to continue serving as a patrol officer.
