FEMA to Host Safety Exercise at Cooper Nuclear Plant
07/31/2012

(KTNC) - Federal officials have scheduled a public meeting to discuss the process involved in a safety exercise that's being conducted at the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville.
The exercise is scheduled for today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Nebraska Public Power District-owned plant. The exercise involves state and county agencies and officials from Nebraska and Missouri.  County officials involved in the exercise are from Nemaha, Otoe, and Richardson Counties in Nebraska, and Atchison and Nodaway Counties in Missouri.
The main goal of the exercise is to test the ability of state, county, and NPPD officials to protect the health and safety of those living near the nuclear plant.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Nuclear Regulatory Commission will observe the exercise. But their conclusions and reports about what they observe won't be discussed at the public meeting.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the NPPD emergency operations facility auditorium in Auburn.
