(KNZA)--It's one scam after another being attempted in Brown County, and Sheriff John Merchant is warning residents not to fall victim.
Merchant, who often warns of the latest scam to circulate in the local area, says that in recent days the attempts to gain fast cash by would be con artists is on the rise(Play Audio)
Another scam that has resurfaced is one that aims for the quick emotional response of the would be victim(Play Audio)
Other reports received by the Sheriff's office involve what isn't a scam per se; however, experience, Merchant says, shows that potential fly by night contractors could lead to dubious business practices(Play Audio)
Merchant says a number of problems have arisen from that promise of work, including money paid but work never completed, along with more money demanded once the job is completed than what had originally been agreed upon.
As for the other scams, such as the fake relative needing help, Merchant says to use logic, not emotion, and to contact other verifiable family members to learn the truth of the situation.
Also, when scammers claim that a small amount of money will earn you much more, that's an obvious scam, as legitimate contests will never ask for a payment in order to gain your prize. More importantly, if you didn't enter any such contest in the first place, there's no way you could have won.
