Topeka Man Nabbed In Jackson Co Metal Theft

William Richey Rowe

(KNZA)--A 46-year-old Topeka man is in the custody of Jackson County authorities, suspected of involvement in the theft of metal machinery, as well as for drug-related crimes.

The incident, leading to the arrest of William Richey Rowe, unfolded Tuesday when the Jackson County Sheriff's Office investigated the report of a theft in the area of 150th and Q Road, west of Mayetta.  The victim told authorities that a utility style trailer, a larger trailer, a brush hog, and other metal items had been stolen.

It was that same day that another resident spotted a man on the property where the items were taken, and attempted to confront the suspect, who quickly sped off in a blue and white Ford pickup truck.

Jackson County investigators launched their search and learned that the driver, and vehicle, were likely from the Topeka area.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff and Undersheriff of Jackson County began a surveillance of the crime scene from the day before, and soon saw the pickup, and driver, return to the location.

Rowe was nabbed just west of the crime scene and taken into custody without incident.

A search warrant was then executed at a Shawnee County residence, west of Topeka, and authorities say the uni-loader trailer and other stolen items were recovered.

Currently, Rowe is held on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony theft, seven counts of misdemeanor theft, eight counts of trespassing, illegal registration, no proof of insurance and driving in violation of restrictions.

Held in the Jackson County Jail, bond, for Rowe, has not  yet been set.
