(KNZA)--Radiators are stolen from tractors and other farm equipment in Jackson County, and that leads to a Sheriff's Office Alert issued with the Jackson County Community Watch Alert System, informing residents to be on the lookout for thieves in rural areas of the county.
Along with radiators, Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says other types of scrap metal have also recently been reported as stolen, with the majority of the thefts occurring in rural Holton.
Morse says several suspect descriptions have been received by his office, including one following an attempted theft Saturday evening.
The victim in that case told sheriff's investigators that he discovered a number of radiators stolen from his equipment and then piled up, apparently to be picked up later.
He described the suspect vehicle as a possible red Chevy Lumina, with tape on the driver's side tail light, and occupied by two women.
One is described as white while the other is described as Native American.
They apparently told him, when approached, that they were having vehicle trouble, but then sped away from the scene.
Morse says residents should keep a close watch on machinery which, if possible, should be stored inside a locked shed or in more visible areas.
Anyone with information, noticing suspicious activity, or wanting to join the Jackson County Community Watch Alert System, should contact Morse at 785-364-2251.
