Fairbury stayed alive in the B1 District American Legion Tournament Monday, with a 9-5 victory over Falls City in a loser’s bracket game between the top two seeds in the tournament.
The teams were tied at 5-all after three innings, but Fairbury scored the go-ahead run in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth inning.
Dalton Griffin was the winning pitcher. He shut down the Falls City offense on just three hits over the final 4.2 innings after Falls City had tied the game with two runs in the third inning.
Offensively, Falls City out-hit Fairbury 9-7. Mitchell Harling had three hits and scored one run, Tyler DiGiacomo had two hits, and Kenny Frederick drove in two runs for Falls City.
Chad Medina paced the Fairbury offense with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Dalton Hinrichs and Pierce Griffin each drove in two runs for Fairbury.
With the win, Fairbury – the number two seed in the tournament – advances to face Hickman in a loser’s bracket game at 6:00 p.m. today, with the winner to meet Beatrice in the championship game at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Nebraska City.
Beatrice defeated Hickman, 7-6, in a winner’s bracket game Monday night.
