Jackson County voters will decide the fate of a new countywide 4-tenths of a percent retailer’s sales tax for road and bridge improvements during the August 7th primary election.
The county’s previous sales tax, which expired March 31st, was divided equally between road and bridge improvements and economic development. That tax took effect six years ago.
The Jackson County Commission wants all the proceeds from the new sales tax proposal, reportedly about $324,000 annually, to be designated for road and bridge improvements
Commissioners say they plan to budget annually for economic development through the county’s partnership with the Northeast Kansas Rural Development Association.
If approved by voters in August, the tax would take effect on October 1st and last seven years.
Jackson County residents have until Tuesday, July 17th to register to vote in the primary election or to change their political party affiliation.
