A body is recovered from the smoldering rubble of a former Horton home, leveled by an early Friday evening explosion, in the 15 hundred block of 2nd Avenue West.
The identity of the victim remains unspecified, pending notification of family and a forthcoming examination of dental records.
All that’s been made public regarding the resident of the home is that he was an elderly man. His identity is expected to be released sometime Monday.
Rescue crews, including Horton Police and Fire, along with the Brown County Sheriff's Office, Kickapoo Tribal Police, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Horton EMS and volunteer fire departments from across the area, responded to the scene, which showed little evidence of a home, as the blaze even apparently melted the steel siding.
Although the official cause of the deadly blast remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office, Horton Police Chief Beau Hasenohr says leads are being followed(Play Audio) An immediate test of the area indicated no gas leaks.
Neighbors near what once was the house report that they felt the brunt of the explosion, with windows rattled and objects thrown from shelves, when the blast occurred prior to 5:30 Friday evening.
